Freight and Transport Safety

Although the freight industry is vital to the economy, the public’s image of large cargo trucks is negative. They are viewed as machines that rule the roads, causing collisions, traffic congestion, and noise pollution.

HGV drivers are statistically safer than car drivers, with half the number of accidents per mile travelled, but the size and weight of heavy goods vehicles means that when a collision does occur, the effects can be significantly worse.

The larger the truck, the less visibility the driver has, and an HGV is likely to have significant blind spots to the rear, side, front, and nearside of the cab. The nearside blind spot is responsible for many events involving vulnerable road users, particularly cyclists.
